Happy Birthday, America!!!

The beginning of this story takes place the Sunday before the 4th.

While cleaning a part of her house, Eric's mom found a few old books of Eric's. She thought Tanis might like them and so gave them to Tanis while we were there for dinner. Well, this had a domino effect and ALL of the kids thought they should have a book to take home. (Eric and I would've made them go without - but Grandma is Grandma and didn't want anyone feeling left out) She found a book quick enough for all of the kids but Shaylyn. When it came to Shaylyn she was a bit at a loss. She only had boys, so she didn't really have any 'old' books that Shaylyn would like and the newer books she has are geared towards little kids.

After thinking about it for a bit, she thought maybe Shaylyn would like a recipe book. She asked Shaylyn and Shaylyn was thrilled. Literally. I think Shaylyn actually ended up coming home with 2 recipe books.
So Shaylyn has these recipe books and has been scouring them for days. The morning of the 4th she decides she wants to make something. And what did she want to make? She came across a recipe for Root Beer.

Seriously. She was also dead set on making it. We had everything BUT dry ice. I was trying to get ready to run some errands, so I wasn't paying much attention to what she was doing, but Eric was. He made sure she knew that dry ice was different than regular ice. Because she had her heart set on making this Root Beer, Eric promised that we'd get some dry ice while we were out running our errands.

I guess Root Beer is somewhat American?

We got back with the dry ice and we went to work. My kids have never seen the effect dry ice makes and they were enthralled. What kind of mother have I been that they haven't experienced the fun of dry ice yet??? At least that was remedied and I have PROOF!

...She was completely unsure about what to think...

So how did it turn out? Well, because we didn't add quite enough water - the kids ended up having Root Beer slushies. They liked it enough, I didn't even try it. (By the time we got home later that night, it had had time to turn into a liquid and I put it in the fridge and the kids drank it all within the next day.)
We then headed to Eric's parents house for dinner before the Bees game. Eric's mom made Sloppy Joe's and I felt bad admitting that I just don't like Sloppy Joe's. I've tried a few different kinds and I've never liked them. I was honest and admitted it to Eric's mom after eating (she kind of already knew, anyway) and said that it was STILL a Sloppy Joe, but it's the best I've ever had. And I was thankful to be fed and not have to figure out another meal.

After visiting for a bit we headed to the game. Sadly, Eric's mom had to work early the next day so she didn't come with us and Eric's dad wasn't feeling great so he came a bit later. We actually got to the game BEFORE the gates even opened. We've never got there that early. We had awesome seats and they were in the perfect place for the fireworks.

The game got a bit long. It was a hot night and because we got there so early, the kids had a hard time sitting still. I was having contractions most of the night, so I was super uncomfortable. The Bees kept the game tied 3-3 for a good majority of the game. In the 9th inning, the game got interesting. It was still tied 3-3, when the Bees got up to bat. The first batter got to 3rd base, so the opposing team decided to purposely fill the bases so that the guy on 3rd would HAVE to run the next hit and the play would be at Home Base. This strategy ended up backfiring in a major way. The Bees had 0 outs and the next guy gets up to bat and hit it out of the park! The Bees won 7-3 and it was so much fun to watch.
They got the fireworks going pretty fast and it was an amazing show. Everytime you thought it might be over, more fireworks would shoot up. My very favorites came at the grand finale and were like popping stars that moved all over the sky. They are hard to explain, but they were awesome.

...Nate's Tradition is to fall asleep before/during fireworks...

It ended up being a super late night for us, but I always enjoy when we can get out as a family - even if it is a bit stressful at times.
