Women's Conference 2014

Posted by with No comments
As usual this time of year, I had plans to meet up with my mom and sister's for Women's Conference. I was super excited that Shaylyn could come with me because she had turned 12, only to learn that 8 year olds were also going to be attending. I don't know where I've been, but I missed that. I wondered how the 8 year olds would handle it.

My nephew had slept over the night before and I had planned to take him to my mom's with me as his mom and dad were both down that way. I left a couple hours later than I wanted to and felt a little bit stressed. It wasn't a major stress, but stress nonetheless.

We get to my Mom's about an hour before our scheduled 'meeting time' and after visiting for a few minutes, Shaylyn and I head out to do some shopping real quick. I had wanted to maybe look for a new dress or something, but sadly nothing came of our efforts. I had planned ahead and brought a dress anyway, but Shaylyn and I both still needed nylons so it wasn't a completely wasted trip.

We get back to my mom's and hurry and change. We then head to dinner at Subway. Not sure why that was the chosen spot, but it was food and it was healthy-ish - which would make our trip out for ice cream afterwords make us feel less guilty.

We went to conference and while none of the talks really stuck with me, the music totally did. I was crying during the first number those sweet primary girls joined with their moms singing and anytime they sang anything, I was in tears. Shaylyn was bored out of her mind and almost fell asleep, I don't know how the 8 year olds fared if my 12 year old couldn't keep herself from being bored.

After the meeting we ran to my little sister's in-laws house to get her little girl. Then we were back at my mom's so we could drive a vehicle big enough to fit us all legally. That meant I was driving. We went to our usual place, Leatherby's and the line was out the door and down the street. We decided we weren't waiting in that line and headed over to Iceburg.

The line still wasn't great, but we definitely beat the rush. People that got there behind us were waiting an hour or so just to place their order. While we were waiting for our ice cream I took some pictures of Shaylyn and my niece. I ended up missing Ailey though. Next conference I've got to figure out a way to get her there so she can come to ice cream with us and not the meeting. I'll work on it.

...Duck face, for the win. I guess both girls need just a little work...

It was a nice night out, but I left a sick baby with Eric. Jacen wasn't very happy most of the day and while Eric tries, we all know men just don't handle stress from babies as well as women. So after I dropped my Mom off and grabbed my stuff we headed on home. I still didn't get home till 11 or so, but Eric was still relieved to have me home and I think my sick little baby was too.

Joys Of Motherhood

Posted by with No comments
Question: It's about 9:00 at night. Your baby has fallen asleep literally on your lap and you have to use the restroom. Do you wake the baby up to go to the bathroom or do you sit there holding your bladder and pray it holds up for as long as it takes for the baby to wake up naturally?

My Answer: You sit there and wait it out until the kid wakes up a few minutes after snapping the photo. He's much happier and your bladder isn't any worse for wear. Just one of the many joys of motherhood.

Pinewood Derby 2014

The Pinewood Derby couldn't have come at a worse time for our family. Eric is still battling his dizziness and his world is almost always still spinning. He has to be careful what he does or he loses his balance quickly or gets sick.

Cutting a car out for Lex wasn't going to be an easy task. Eric decided the easiest thing he could do was a wedge shape. I was extra nervous watching Eric cut it out as he really wasn't feeling that great, but he did it and Lex had his wedge shape that he could race.

Lex went about sanding it and painting it. He decided he was going to do a Minecraft car and he wanted a creeper on it. Now Shaylyn probably could've painted a good looking creeper on it, but Lex wanted one from his book printed out to put on his car.

I told him to paint it and I'd take care of putting the creeper on it. I scanned the picture in, printed it off, mod podged it onto the painted car and then I sprayed the whole car with my sealer that I do all my projects in. It ended up looking pretty good and from far away you couldn't tell it was a picture.

The race had each car race in 3 heats, one time in each lane. I took a video of each race and complied it to the below video. I also disabled the audio of the boys cheering each other on, it was kind of loud.

For the record, the Batmobile was a car one of the leader's made. I think he purposely made it so that it was slow and I don't know if he followed the 'rules' or not, but it was awesome that he made a car to race so that the boys didn't feel so bad and none of the boys would be the biggest loser.

Lex was okay that he didn't win, he was just happy his car seemed to do better than last year. He was also extra happy that Grandma Shirley happened to be at our house that night and was able to come see him race.

He ended up getting the award for the CREEPIEST CAR.

We Fought The Laws of Nature and The Laws Won

Within the sickness that plagued our family for a full 2 weeks, Ailey ended up with Pink Eye. I knew it was coming and saw it. I called the Pediatrician's office almost immediately and surprisingly I didn't have to take Ailey in. They just called the rx in to the Pharmacy.

Being that Ailey and Jace are still fairly young and in close contact most of the time, I figured he'd get it too. I didn't realize just how bad he'd get it though, even after having medicine in his eyes as well.

Poor kid looked like he'd been in some major fight or something. He was still so happy and smiley though. I just love this kid and his attitude.

A few days later he just wasn't happy. I know that he likes looking at himself, so I tried to see if taking pictures would help. It didn't really. But you can't always expect happiness when you feel like crap.

The Simple Things

Posted by with No comments
When I was growing up and in my teen years, my mom would listen to LDS artists quite often. A few of these artists stuck with me. Afterglow was one such artist. While they started out as LDS artist, they released a couple albums under the name McCoslyn and Paye. I've grown kind of fond of the albums and while it really has nothing to do with the rest of this post, I found it applicable for this post's title and introduction.

One one of their albums they released, they have a song called The Simple Things. The lyrics are as follows.

THE SIMPLE THINGS
If there's one thing I've learned in my life,
About how to treat a sweetheart or a wife,
You can buy all the pearls, all the diamonds in the world.
But if you're wise, you'll take my advice.

'Cause a heart can't be purchased with gold.
If you want a love that lasts till you grow old,
Then your love can't depend on the presents that you send.
Hearts you buy, will never stay sold.

But it's 'Hello' every morning.
It's a kiss to say, 'Goodnight'.
And it's knowing when she's had a day
That makes her want to be held tight.
It's the kind of small investments
That help you keep the love you've got.
It's the simple things that really mean a lot.

If there's one thing on which you can depend,
It's not the worth of gifts you give,
But the message that you send.
Give her time, give her love, give her all the stars above.
Just be sure you give the simple things until the very end.

But it's 'Hello' every morning.
It's a kiss to say, 'Goodnight'.
And it's knowing when she's had a day
That makes her want to be held tight.
It's the kind of small investments
That help you keep the love you've got.
It's the simple things that really mean a lot.

The simple things that really mean a lot.

This is a lesson Eric has learned well. He does so many 'simple' things that make me love him more each day. The following story is one such case.

After our vacation depression started coming back. I was still stressed when I would think about our vacation, one of the kids had been sick every day for the past 2 weeks and Eric still wasn't improving much. I was at the end of all I could take.

In the meantime Eric and I had wanted to come up with a solution for storing all of our board games. For a long time we kept them in the basement, but we'd find out the kids had gotten into them and lost pieces or destroyed the game in some other fashion. So then we put them in our closet, but I don't turn the stupid fan on when I shower because I hate the noise, so it was slowly destroying the boxes. Eric decided to just stick them on the floor and end tables in our room and we'd get bookcases for them sometime. That was probably 2 years ago. We finally had enough of them taking up space in our room so we took a trip to Ikea to find a solution.

While we were in Ikea I get a phone call from Tanis. He kind of mumbles and speaks fast on the phone, so I didn't understand what he was saying at first. All I heard was 'flower'. So I think Flower got outside and they got her back or something (he's called just to tell us this before). When I ask him about that he says, 'No,' and repeats his sentence. 'There are flowers here for Shilo Hardy.' I say, 'Someone delivered flowers for me?' and he says, 'Yes.' I tell him, 'Okay' and that's the end of the conversation.

Eric is a little frustrated as he wanted it to be a surprise, but I told him the color and type of flower were still a surprise. A little bit later I was looking for decorations to go on top of the cabinet we chose for the games, he mentions, "There's something at home to make it look pretty."

I kind of forgot about the flowers during our shopping trip and on the drive home, but when I got home I had a beautiful surprise. He had gotten me my favorite flowers in my favorite color. I was floored, they were beautiful.

Eric was a little bit frustrated when he saw the flowers and said they were supposed to look a bit different. He showed me the picture and it was supposed to be a multicolor arrangement. I decided it was an error in my favor and I really wasn't going to complain.

The flowers got even more beautiful as they started to bloom.

Day 3

DAY 4

So dang pretty. I almost cried when I had to throw them away. Instead I just messaged Eric and told him we had a problem. When he asked what it was I told him I had to throw out the flowers and now the space was too empty. I needed more flowers. He hasn't fixed that problem yet. HAHAHA!

Even though Eric was still pretty sick, he knew that I was struggling and hurting. His simple words on the card, 'You are never alone' will stick with me forever. I was stuck in my own struggles and frustrations, but it dawned on me - he was experiencing everything too.

He knows how stressed I was on our trip and he was hurting to know there wasn't anything he could do to help me out. He knew where my depression was coming from and while he tried his best to help me see the good, I just couldn't see it. He was hurting to know I was hurting.

I am so very thankful for him and for all the simple things he does for me.

The Happiest Place On Earth?!?!?! The Conclusion

Posted by with No comments
DAY 6

We wake up and Eric isn't feeling real well. Apparently the day before took more out of him than either of us thought it might. It meant I was driving again. In California. On crazy freeways. I decided I wanted to get out of the hotel and on the road ASAP.

We get packed up and Eric goes to find a luggage rack. Someone that works at the hotel tells him he needs to call the front desk and they'll send one up. Well we call and she says she'll send one up. Then we wait and wait and wait.

Finally Eric's had enough and goes in search of one on his own again. But then we see someone in my family and we take theirs after they are done. Cody asks if he can help out and so him and Eric take the rack down and the rest of us follow behind. Because of valet parking we do our best to get loaded up quickly and get the car out of the way.

We say goodbye to my family that was still around and they say they're heading to the beach if we want to go. We obviously don't, so we head on our way.

We're all hungry and decide we'll have a 'nice' breakfast before heading out. It was about 10:30 or so, so we figured if we ate now, we could travel a little bit longer before the kids got hungry. We stopped at a Denny's and there was a guy making balloon characters. We passed right by him, but the girls couldn't stop talking about him. I wondered aloud how much he charged and decided that maybe on our way out we'd stop and ask him.

He ended up leaving before us, but not before he came over and asked if we wanted the Ariel balloon he had had on display. I didn't quite understand what he was asking, but he kind of just handed it to me. I then understood that he was asking if we wanted it. I asked him how much it was but he walked off. I felt bad and a little dumbfounded. Had I not been so dumbfounded I would've paid him for his efforts. Ailey was thrilled to have the balloon and I wanted to get a picture, but just didn't before it got ruined. Tanis did manage the following before she was destroyed too terribly.

The traffic wasn't nearly as bad being earlier in the morning, but there were still some scary parts for me.

It was a pretty uneventful ride until we get a few miles outside of Vegas. There was a wreck that had caused a major backup on the freeway. So many cars going so slow was a little nerve wracking. When we finally got passed the wreck they were just clearing it up. It made me thankful that we were behind it and not involved in it.

I continue the drive to Mesquite and I'm getting tired and it's getting late. I was so anxious and on edge and just wanted to get to the hotel. Eric can tell I'm getting tired and keeps trying to keep me going. We decide we'll check into the hotel and then go get food at the pizza place I wanted to go to on Sunday.

We find the Pizza Place and thankfully got there an hour before closing. Their food was good and I was glad we had a nice meal. We get to our room and because Eric used some travel site to book our hotel we were stuck in a Smoking Room. We walked in and I immediately start coughing. We immediately turn on the fan to try to dissipate the smell. It actually worked pretty good and even though it wasn't the best of circumstances, we got there late enough that we would only be sleeping there and then heading out in the morning.

DAY 7
We wake up in the morning and I'm gearing myself up for the drive home. Eric surprises me and says he thinks he can handle the drive home. I am thankful as I need some rest. I'd been way too stressed for way too many days. There are a few times during the drive he mentions that he should've had me drive, but he pulls through.

We get home and lounge. It felt good to be home. That night into the early morning hours, Shaylyn starts puking which ends up bringing a fun next 2 weeks to our home, but that's another story.

MY CLOSING THOUGHTS
While our trip was obviously less than ideal, I'm still glad we were able to make it. I was thankful for my sisters sacrifice that allowed us the opportunity to go on the trip. I was super grateful for a wonderful mother-in-law who sacrificed her time and sanity to help us out where she felt she could. I was so glad Jace was in a safe environment where he could play and move without being constrained by carseats and strollers, and that he was away from a raving, lunatic of a mother.

I am thankful for my family. I am thankful for the people they are and that we all just take care of each other's needs where we see that we can. I am thankful that my mom and sisters stepped in when they realized just how stressed I was and did what they could to lighten the load. I am thankful for a father and a brother who both honor their Priesthood and that my little sister married a man who also honors his Priesthood and that they were all worthy to give my husband a blessing in his time of need.

I learned just how much I rely on Eric and how much he does when we go on a trip. Eric and I have taken on very traditional roles in our marriage and I realized how much the 'man' has to do on a family vacation. I also learned that I much more enjoy being Mom than being Dad. I also learned that it sucks being Mom & Dad, so to those of you my friends who are doing both jobs - kudos to you. You are amazing! And there are those of us who admire you more than you know.

I also learned just what I am capable of. There's nothing like trial by fire to learn just how strong you are. While I didn't do everything the very best I could do, I did overcome some obstacles. I vowed I'd never drive in California. I did it. I struggle taking all of my kids anywhere by myself, but I was able to do it for 2 days in crowded theme parks. I can do so much more than I usually give myself credit for and while I would never want to go through such trials again, I am thankful to have had them so I could learn more about myself.

The Happiest Place On Earth?!?!?! Day Five

DAY 5

Today was our last day at Disneyland. I had prayed really hard that Eric would be able to join us at least one day. My prayer was answered and he felt like he could at least come with us, though he'd be in a wheelchair all day. I didn't care, I just wanted him with us. I hadn't felt whole the whole trip and I just needed my best friend with me.

I texted my Mom to see where everyone else was and they had all gone to the park for early entrance. We were already an hour after opening, but I had wanted the kids to wake up on their own time. So after getting everyone ready we headed to the car. I drove us to the parking lot and then we took the shuttle to the parks.

After we got through security I went and got the wheelchair for Eric. And we were ready for our day in the parks. I had decided earlier on in the week that if Eric was able to make it with us one of these days, I was going to make the day all about what the kids wanted to do. And that's what we did, for the most part. I also made sure I got pictures of the kids where I wanted to get pictures.

With Eric's input, we decided our first course of action would be to meet Elsa and Anna from Frozen. We were kinda surprised that it was a 3 hour wait, but all the kids - except Lex, wanted to meet them. So we stuck it out. The workers kept telling people that Elsa would be in and out that day so there was no guarantee that you'd see her. Well our 3 hour wait paid off and we got to see both Elsa and Anna. We were sad that Ailey got nervous though and didn't want to get into the picture.

When we had finished with the Frozen characters, we headed to the ride Nate had wanted to go on since the first day in Disneyland. That was the boat ride at Storybook Land or something. When we actually got on the ride he was worried he'd get wet and I had to convince him that he wouldn't get wet on this ride.

We then took time out for lunch. Eric had a friend that was talking up the corn dogs, so Eric wanted to find them. So we found the corn dog stand and got everyone but Lex and I a corn dog. I wasn't sure what I wanted, but I knew a corn dog wasn't it. After walking a little bit Lex and I decided on a pretzel. Not very nutritious, but it tied me over and wasn't heavy on the tummy.

Our next step was to the Matterhorn per Lex's wish. On the way we saw that Star Tours only had a 20 minute wait, so I took the kids and we went on that. Thankfully, Eric's genes paid off once again and Ailey was able to come with us. It was so much fun and I was glad to have had a ride where I could see all my kids expressions at once. The little kids laughed so much during that ride and I was thankful we took the short little stop.

So then we head on over to the Matterhorn. Tanis and Ailey stay behind with Daddy and I take the other kids and we are off. After the Matterhorn we have requests to get light sabers. The kids had been really good the whole trip as far as asking for things, knowing that the last day would be souvenir day. We decided since we were right there, we might as well let them make their light sabers. Everyone but Ailey made one. And they were super awkward to carry the rest of the night, but having the wheelchair helped a bit. And don't think I wasn't super thankful for the cashier - who was really only doing her job - but told the kids to keep the lightsabers closed until they weren't in the parks. She even taped them down.

I had wanted more pictures in Toon Town, so that's where we headed next. I figured the kids could have a little bit of fun and I could get my fill of pictures.

...Shaylyn insisted on this picture...

We would've visited Mickey (Ailey really wanted to see him) and his friends, but our timing was off and they had closed off all those meet and greets because it was about time for the parade. We were also running out of time as I wanted to get over to Radiator Springs and we needed to eat some dinner. We also needed time for dinner.

On the way over to California Adventure, we let the girls stop in a few shops as Shaylyn was looking for a certain toy. Eric thought he had overheard people say where they had found this toy, so we went in that store first. Well that toy wasn't in the store, but Ailey found some cute little princess figurines to buy.

There was another store in the area that we had Shaylyn just go in to look around. The rest of us waited outside by an entrance and the entrance just happened to be where the gatekeeper person might be in a fairy tale, so we let the boys channel their inner gatekeepers.

We made our way over to California Adventure and to Cars Land. I had wanted to see it all lit up at night and get some pictures in that atmosphere. We looked for food to eat there, but the only real place to eat there was a little more fancy that we were looking for.

Eric was starting to get cold and I had forgotten his jacket back in the hotel room, so we went in search of a hoodie for him. I felt so bad for forgetting because he was literally shaking and actually was very cold to the touch, even.

We tried one store out in Radiator Springs, but the clothes were for little kids. Nate did find a Cars set that he got as part of his souvenirs, but we had no luck in finding anything Eric's size. We make our way a little down the street and find another store, so we try that store. Thankfully we find a hoodie, in Eric's size, though the price was more than we'd normally pay. Eric was just glad to get warm again.

Seconds after leaving the store Lightning McQueen drives by. I was literally inches away. Eric had wondered why I left him in the dust, but then he figured it out. I got a little excited. Don't know why, but Lightning McQueen and Mater have been favorites of mine for a long time.

I see that Luigi's Flying Tires is also only a 10 minute wait, so we get Eric parked in a place where he'll be able to see us and run to get in line. As we're getting in line, Mater drives by. I was so sad I didn't have the camera on me. We have a lot of fun on the ride, but decide we should probably head out to get dinner and let the kids do some shopping.

On our way out of Radiator Springs, we passed the small Mater statue thing and no one was around it. So of course, we took pictures.

Right next to little Mater was another ride with a short wait time. We jumped on that ride real quick before heading out. Before leaving California Adventure all together we stopped by a shop completed about Oswald. Tanis was adamant about getting something Oswald. After looking around a bit he settled on a knit, stuffed Oswald.

We were losing time and daylight, so our next step was to Downtown Disney. We tried to take the wheelchair out to Downtown Disney not really realizing it wasn't PART of Disneyland Parks. So we had to turn in the wheelchair and Eric had to walk through Downtown Disney. It wasn't so easy for him, but he loves his kids enough that he sacrificed for them.

We hit the World of Disney store first. Hoping it might need to be the 2nd to last stop of the night. Tanis found a Jack Skellington stuffed thing that he grabbed almost right away, Shaylyn decided on a lanyard with trading pins of the princess' shoes. She also found the item she had been looking for all day long, and yes we grabbed one for Ailey as well. It's an Anna/Elsa doll. You flip the dress and the other girl is under it. Kind of a cool idea.

We finish looking through the store and Lex finds a hat he just loves. Eric and I aren't crazy about the style of hat, but it's what Lex wants. At one point we realize Nate is missing. I couldn't believe it. We had gone through 3 days of adventure parks and hadn't lost a child, but we go into a store and within a 30 minute time period a kid is missing! My heart starts racing and I'm not in a good place mentally. I was like we've already had a pretty crummy vacation all things considered and now, I've lost a kid! When I got back to thinking a little more calmly, I made sure the other kids stayed with Eric and retraced our steps. At one point I had a feeling to turn and saw that Nate had just passed. He was crying so hard and I almost started bawling. I gave him a super big hug and made sure he understood why it was important to stay close to Mommy and Daddy.

We check out and time is really running short. We only have x amount of time to get back to the shuttles before we're walking blocks to our car. I was really unhappy with the selection of Tinkerbell things they had in the store and still had nothing for Jace or for me as a souvenir. Ailey also had a good chunk of souvenir money left.

The boys and Shaylyn had all wanted to go to the Lego Store from the beginning. I decided that it would be more beneficial time wise if we split up. Eric took the boys and Shaylyn to the Lego store and I decided that Ailey and I would head to Build A Bear. I could get something soft for Jace and Ailey loves Build A Bear. We quickly decide on our animals and wait forever to get them stuffed. I swear this store had the slowest workers ever there was. After getting our animals stuffed we quickly grab the outfits. I didn't even have time to get them dressed. We stand in the checkout line for almost 10 minutes and I have the thought that people in California must be used to waiting in line.

...Ailey got the little doggie and dressed her as Rapunzel (big surprise), I got the Panda bear and dressed her as Tinkerbell (duh!) and I chose a nice soft bear for Jace and dressed him in another character I've always liked...

We meet back up with Eric and the other kids and book it back to Disneyland Parks area. We realize we're going to have to go back through security and laugh because of all the bags we have that they are going to have to go through. Just before it's our turn to go through security, one of the worker's says, "It's 10:00, Disneyland is closed." and he opens up all the marked off area so that people can just go through. YAY! No waiting forever while they search through our bags.

We are heading to the shuttle line when I hear a voice say to Shaylyn, "Are you sure you have all your souvenirs?" I look and see some person kind of heckling Shaylyn. She didn't quite understand the question and is like, 'Yeah'. The lady then explains she was just teasing her and starts a conversation. These types of situations make me nervous and I was a little nervous for my daughter's safety, but before too long I can tell this lady is just overly friendly and is trying to make conversation.

It's a good thing that Eric and Shaylyn can talk to strangers fairly easily and they kept the conversation kind of flowing. She tells us she's been coming to Disneyland for years and videotaping the rides or something, then she gets all scientific on me and I kind of space out. She realizes we're from Utah and then seeing our number of kids, makes the correct assumption that we're Mormon. You never know how someone is going to respond to you in that situation, but she was very complimentary. She said how much she admires our sense of family and religion. I was floored.

We get on the shuttle and she continues talking to us. She asks our kids names and we tell her. She then introduces herself as Stefka. Not sure where her family is from, but she doesn't really talk with an accent. She shares a little more about her life on the way to the parking lot and when we get to the parking lot we get off the shuttle without really any other words shared.

We find our way to our car and believe it or not, Stefka has parked next to us. She had went to start her car and then she stopped it. She got back out of the car and because we were still loading kids and souvenirs she asks if she can use a phone. Her phone had died and she wanted to call her mom to let her know she was on her way home.

Eric gives her his phone and she dials away. Before too long she's speaking in some other language and finishes the conversation with her mom. She tells us thank you and that she told her mom how she had met a wonderful family who had been so kind to her. She felt that God had put us in the situation for a reason. Had she not parked next to us or had either of us left at a different time, so wouldn't have been able to make her call.

I was honestly amazed at the testimony she had of God and his influence in our lives and how he places certain people in our lives at certain times for varying reasons. This is what touched my heart. Though she wasn't of our religion, she still had such a strong faith in God that she could testify of him being thoughtful of us all and being in our lives at times when it is necessary. I don't think I'll ever forget Stefka, even if I didn't have the best opinion of her in the beginning.

We get in the car and start to head back to the hotel, but we are all still hungry as we had no time to eat. We pass by a strip mall that has a burger place next to Subway and they are both still open. I'm spoiled and had Eric get me a burger, then he went to Subway to get him and the kids some food. Because he was wearing one of his BYU hats the worker at Subway mentioned something to him. They have a good, fun sort of conversation and even though I don't remember what Eric said they talked about, you could see they were having a fun conversation.

We get back to the hotel, eat our late dinner and call it a night. Eric says he hopes he can drive tomorrow and I second that motion. Before we go to bed, Lex insists that I take a picture of him in his hat and send it to my little brother, Logan. This is because I blame Logan for the influence of this style of hat.
